Band 6+: Eco-tourism usually involves people visiting remote areas. Some people think this will have a negative impact on local cultures and communities. What problems can result from eco-tourism?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Ecotourism is a form of responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people. Despite its benefits, there are some negative effects of ecotourism on local people and indigenous cultures. This essay will discuss the problems caused by ecotourism and suggest the effective solutions.

Cultural exchange is one of the most significant factor that affects a country’s cultural values. People from all over the world show interest in ecotourism that can increase the possibilities of cultural exchange. For example, tourists often wear their own cultural clothes while travelling, influencing locals to adopt similar styles. This imitation can gradually cause a country to lose their cultural identity and authenticity.

To retain the cultural values of a country, controlled tourism should be implemented. This will help the local groups stick to their identity and cultural norms. For instance, a fixed number of tourists should be allowed to visit the natural places which results in less interaction with indigenous groups. Controlled tourism not only helps to conserve the values of a country but also demonstrates the country’s commitment with its cultural norms.

Furthermore, the government should launch educational campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of cultural preservation. This initiative by government would help to develop the sense of responsibility within indigenous communities. For example, people will become more knowledgeable and conscious regarding their cultural values. This step would divide the responsibility between government and local communities, ensuring both play a role in conserving the cultural values.

In conclusion, cultural authenticity of a country can be affected when local groups are frequently exposed to different cultures. This can be reduced by ensuring controlled tourism and launching educational campaigns to educate people about the value of their cultural norms.
