The limelight given to international media, which includes mediums such as films, television, and magazines, seems to have an effect on local and societal culture.
While some people may argue that exposure to uninterrupted, global media has advantages which allow the general population to remain aware of their surroundings and international affairs, other individuals firmly believe that there are many downsides to access to such information and that it can cause issues. I personally think that both perspectives are valid, and a more neutral standpoint needs to be taken.
One one hand, prolonged access of globalized forms of media allow awareness regarding international issues which affect the overall population. People can be made aware of certain debates taking place about societal issues such as equality, bias and racism which provides them with an oppurtunity to hear out different opinions and creating their own thought process. The usage of agents of media such as magazines, films and television in general let people around the world learn about the different cultures, traditions and norms that are not known to them. For instance, a child sitting in america can have a metaphorical window through which they can have a peek into indian culture and how bollywood presents it. Local culture is affected by this. Exposure to global media can also inspire creativity in areas such as art, fashion, filmmaking, and education by blending local traditions with modern ideas. Films can provide us with insight about specific events taking place worldwide and reduce the chances of people having biased opinions and allows a space for empathy.
Nonetheless, it can be argued that international media can overshadow traditional and local culture and it may even replace it overtime. Constant exposure to foreign lifestyles, fashion, and language may cause younger generations to admire western culture more than their own heritage. For example, instead of wearing cultural, traditional clothing, children may want to lean towards global fashion trends depicted by the media, which in-turn can cause the depletion of cultural fashion and clothing. Additionally, local languages may be substituted by dominant international languages like English or even slang. This cultural shift can lead to the gradual disappearance of indigenous traditions and a loss of cultural identity, particularly in developing countries where local culture is already vulnerable. Furthermore, such depictions display and create unrealistic standards in terms of beauty standards and lifestyles. Especially among young people, this can lead them to feel dissatisfaction and low self-esteem, making them chase more of a materialistic life.
In conclusion, international media do have an everlasting effect on local culture and traditions, as it provides a medium for cultural exchange and education although, it can also negatively impact the preservation of certain cultures and values, due to a younger audience being heavily influenced.
