Band 5+: Families who send their children to private schools should not be required to pay taxes that support the state education system. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, the debate about whether university students should have the autonomy to decide what they want to study or forced to pick up subjects which are deemed beneficial for their futures has gained significant attraction. This essay aims to discuss both perspective and provide my opinion on this matter.

On one hand, it is widely held belief that practical subjects offers better career trajectories. As we are gradually shifting into the digital era, the machines and programmes invented require people with science background to operate. Thus, it is not surprising to see that science degree graduates have more job offers as compared to those with art degrees. Moreover, university students are encouraged to consider career longevity when picking subjects. Science and technology related courses is proven to be superior in terms of this aspect. For instance, technology, despite its recent introduction to society, will be a significant field of study in upcoming decades, providing graduates with promising career paths.

Despite the aforementioned arguments, I strongly believe that students should have the autonomy to choose their preferred subjects. One perspective favouring this argument revolves around the unpredictability of the job market. Nobody can accurately predict the career gaps in the society as the world is constantly evolving rapidly. For example, it seemed impossible for pilots to lose their jobs at first, however, many were laid off during the pandemic as travelling has prohibited. Instead, writers, bloggers and musicians gained popularity by posting and performing on online platforms. Besides that, students should be encouraged to study subjects they are passionate about. Passion is needed in maintaining goal-oriented behavior, which is needed for students to succeed in their lives.

In conclusion, although taking up practical subjects is advantageous is some ways, I am in the opinion that students should study their preferred subjects. By organising career talks and exhibitions, students can have a better understanding on what they want to pursue, thereby shaping their career path. As the saying by Steve Job goes: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
