Globalisation is the process, which changed the world by increasing interconnection of countries through trade, technology and culture in the last century. Some believe that the loss of cultural identity is caused by this process. This essay will explore both advantages and disadvantages of globalisation before partly disagreeing with this view.
On the one hand, globalisation may cause the loss of national identity through some global trends. In terms of cuisine, which is an essential part of culture, globalization brought some global trends of cuisine in almost every country. It means that small countries with weak national identity might struggle because of that. New generations might consume, for instance, McDonalds rather than traditional cuisine. The second contributing factor is fashion, countries such as Italy, France and the USA included their national trends in almost every country of the world. Jeans were firstly made in the USA, now they are everywhere. However, it is strongly believed that benefits would outweigh those drawbacks.
On the other hand, globalization has created an opportunity for countries to share their traditions. Conversely, the national cuisine of a particular country now can be placed everywhere, which means that it only improves their cultural identity. Furthermore, because of globalization people are able to travel to other countries and explore their national identity.
Fashion is also significant in terms of saving national identity and globalisation has only improved it. One vivid example of this can be Ukraine, in 2022 there were at least 5 Ukrainian brands with perfect performance at Paris Fashion Week. Consequently, social media was flooded with them, which shared Ukrainian culture throughout the whole world.
In conclusion, globalisation might lead to the partial loss of culture, particularly in cuisine and fashion. Despite this, it is strongly believed that it has only improved the quality of sharing different national traditions throughout the world by making it easier for smaller countries to share their culture.
