There is an ongoing debate about whether governments should introduce laws controlling people’s diets and nutritional choices, or whether individuals should have the freedom to decide what they eat. In my view, the responsibility for healthy eating should be shared between governments and individuals, as both have important roles to play in improving public well-being.
On the one hand, many people believe that food choices are a personal preference that should remain free from government interference. They argue that it is individuals’ responsibility to control and regulate their own diets, as most people are able to determine what is beneficial for their health. For instance, athletes, vegetarians, and people with specific medical conditions often require different diets that suit their needs. If governments impose dietary regulations, those people’s personal needs might be overlooked. Therefore, many people believe that individuals retain the freedom to make their own nutritional decisions.
On the one hand, some people claim that governments have a responsibility to regulate people’s nutritional choices in order to protect public health. These days, many people are becoming obese due to unhealthy dietary choices. For example, a large proportion of young adults in the United States are overweight, which increases their risk of developing various health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. This is mainly caused by misleading advertising aimed at children. Thus, many believe that the government should introduce laws to reduce obesity and diet-related deceases and restrict misleading advertisements.
In conclusion, although individual are responsible for their daily food choices, governments should also support healthy eating through applying appropriate regulations. Therefore, maintaining a healthy diet is a shared responsibility between both public and the government.
