Giving the government the power to limit the freedom of speech can lead to power abuse. Not only can it be used as their tool to silence the public voice, but also violate democracy freedom. For instance, nowadays the public tends to use technology to criticize the government by uploading content and giving comments on their social media. If the government can freely decide what is considered as harmful content, they simply can remove any content, including the one that hinders the policies. In addition, the limitation in expressing their feelings and opinion constitutes a violation of human rights.
Controlling harmful content does not require restricting freedom of speech. There are other solutions that are more effective and less risky. For example, social media companies can develop stronger content filters using clear community guidelines. Harmful content, such as threat, violation, hate speech, and dangerous information can be taken off without involving government censorship. Additionally, improving digital literacy can help people to identify misleading or harmful material on their own. Educating people might be a long-term strategy that reduces the spread of harmful content without limiting individual rights.
In conclusion, I disagree that the government should restrict freedom of speech to control harmful content online. Although harmful material is a real concern, the solution should focus on platform responsibility and public education rather than limiting basic human rights.
