Band 7+: Government should spend more money on medical research to protect citizens’ health rather than on protecting the environment. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a view that the government should allocate substantial funding to medical research to improve public health instead of dedicating resources to environmental protection. While I agree with the importance of medical research, I believe that both sectors should receive equal attention.

Advancing medical research can lead to significant breakthroughs in developing treatments, vaccines, and improving overall health outcomes. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific research revealed a lack of adequate medicines and vaccines, which highlighted an urgent need in the field of medicine. The pandemic has further emphasized the necessity of effective international measures to prevent, treat, and control infectious diseases. Without government support, it is challenging for scientists to protect public health, as insufficiently equipped laboratories and a lack of medicines can severely hinder scientific progress.

In my opinion, however, protecting the environment should be equally prioritized. If the government reduces or halts investments in national parks, wildlife, and protected green spaces, their current plight will worsen. Consequently, the state must dedicate funding to environmental protection to ensure ecological integrity and prevent illegal activities that harm nature. All these initiatives require considerable investment, and government funding plays a decisive role in improving the state of the environment.

In conclusion, the allocation of public funds is crucial for developing medical vaccines to protect citizens’ health; however, environmental protection should not be neglected, as improving the state of the environment also depends heavily on financial support.

Some people argue that primary schools focus too much on formal learning and do not give children enough time to play.
