It is often argued if governments should spend more money on providing STEM education in schools than on music and art because employers need more people with a STEM background than music or art. In my perspective, I agree that more funding should be allocated to STEM fields but I have certain reservations which I will elaborate further in the essay.
The increase of funding towards the STEM field by the government will ensure that students across the country are provided with all the latest equipments in their labs. This, in turn, ensures that students can carry out more experiments and be more interested in the STEM field. In addition to learning, it also helps build persistence, determination and resilience in a student. This also plays a crucial role in strengthening an inherent human characteristic, which is curiosity.
Another reason is the current trajectory of our future. As the world becomes more technologically dependent, more STEM students are required to help with the innovation of new technology. With that being said, it is crucial to understand that this increased funding should not be done while compromising focus on arts and music. Arts, music and other hobbies is what keeps juveniles occupied. It build their character and without such forms of self expression, we all would just be lifeless humans. Arts and music is a great form of escapism and plays a vital role in cultural identity. Neglecting focus on these fields may result in humans not valuing our culture and history,
In conclusion, I believe it is essential that more funding is allocated to the STEM subjects, however, this must not be done while compromising arts and music field.
