Due to the increasing costs of healthcare, many governments are experiencing difficulties in balancing their healthcare budgets. A current discussion is whether citizens should be responsible for their own healthcare insurance, or if the government should provide citizens with free healthcare. I believe that the government should provide the basic healthcare needs for the population.
Healthcare is a principal and basic human right. With a private health insurance system, some of the population may not be able to afford the increasing costs of healthcare. It can be argued that private health insurance is also relatively more expensive. In a country, a fair healthcare system is vital in ensuring the health of the population. When the government is able to provide the country with free healthcare, everyone regardless of background and financial capability is able to receive this essential right, ensuring equality amongst all social classes.
Even though the costs of healthcare are increasing, governments may be able to counterbalance this by adjusting their budgeting, allocating a higher budget towards the healthcare system. This allows the public to receive a good quality of healthcare, impacting the overall well being of the citizens. With provided insurance, citizens will also be more willing to check on their health, for example, by going to regular checkups, which can decrease the risk of serious illnesses that can impact the country negatively in the long run.
Therefore, the topic of healthcare provision by governments is one that needs to be considered deeply. I believe that the government has a responsibility in ensuring the basic healthcare needs for their citizens are met, while being responsible for their budgeting.
