Band 7+: IIt is important for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. Punishment is necessary to help them learn this distinction. to what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is recommended that youngsters should be taught how to distinguish right and wrong in their childhood. Some suggest that punishment is crucial to achieve this. To my perspective, I both agree and disagree with the statement for the following reasons in this essay.

On the one hand, punishment should not be the only measure to teach children as there are other feasible approaches. To be more specific, before any kind of punishment is applied, children should initially be allowed to learn from their parents and teachers and freely make mistakes. As differentiating right and wrong cannot be expressed effectively through lessons but rather be learnt from experience, letting children to observe and imitate naturally is highly recommended. Therefore, adults in close relationship with the kids can act correctly and be good role models, and hence the result of children behaving nicely can be guaranteed.

Another reason that punishment should no be used so often is that it can consequently deter the development of children. The explanation for this is that younger individuals are more impressionable and sensitive. If they receive all kinds of punishment whenever they do something wrong, they will unconsciously develop a fear of trying new things. As a result, the hesitation grows bigger and prevents them to do anything outside their comfort zone, leading to their limited development and missing of opportunities in the future.

On the other hand, punishment of reducing rewards can be utilized to make the process of learning faster and more effective. In other words, adults can use rewards and compliment as a signal for children to realize what they should do and take away these when they do not act right. This has proved to be extremely effective for pets and can be resembled for teaching children especially when their awareness has not developed fully.

In conclusion, there are other methods to teach children what they should or should not do, so I am opposed of the idea that punishment is an essential tool although it can work in some cases.
