From the distant past, science has become the core disciplines of many education systems. However, recent years witnessed a significant decrease in the number of students opting from subjects in this domain. This essay aims to identify the reasons behind this phenomenon as well as the effects it may exert on society.

The primary reasons why students are reluctant to choose science subjects as their major are attributed to the demanding nature of the subjects and their unpromising job prospects they offer. It is undeniable that students often regard science subjects as challenging, as there are a large number of theories and formula that they need to commit to their memory in order to perform well in these subjects. Some students who are not good at numbers and logical thinking may even find this knowledge incomprehensible. Moreover, graduated in this field are unlikely to find a fulfilling job, because job vacancies are few. Even if they manage to land a job related to this major, it often requires long working hours and offers lower salary than jobs in other areas such as economics or engineering.

The decline in the number of students choosing science subjects may lead to detrimental impacts on the development of society. Firstly, the low number of graduates majored in science is synonymous with the lack of workforce in this field. It means that there will not be sufficient human resources who work as scientists or researchers. As a result, the number of groundbreaking studies which can bring about positive changes in society can reduce to a certain extent. Secondly, the advancement in technology can also be hampered, because fewer students learning science can result in fewer technological innovations. As development in technology is what gives the competitive edge to a country, this shortage of innovative inventions can severely affect economic growth and standard of living of people there.

In conclusion, the sophistication of science subjects coupled with the unpromising job opportunities are the fudamental reasons behind the diminishing rate of students choosing this field. This trend engenders numerous societal repercussions, specifically the scarcity of scientific experts as well as inventions that can improve the living condition of citizens
