Band 8+: In many countries, people are becoming increasingly dependent on the internet. What are the main reasons for this development, and what effects does it have on individuals and society?

In recent years, increasing dependence on the internet has become a prominent phenomenon in many parts of the world. This development has attracted widespread attention due to its significant implications for individuals and society. This essay will examine the main reasons behind this issue and analyse its major effects.

There are several underlying factors contributing to this growing dependence. One of the most significant causes is the rapid advancement of digital technology. Easy access to smartphones, high-speed internet, and online platforms has made the internet an essential part of daily life for communication, work, and entertainment. As a result, people rely heavily on online services to perform even simple tasks. Another important factor is the shift of essential services to digital platforms. For instance, education, banking, and shopping are increasingly conducted online, thereby reinforcing constant internet usage.

This situation has a number of serious effects. One major consequence is reduced face-to-face social interaction, which negatively impacts personal relationships and communication skills. As people spend more time online, real-life social bonds often weaken. In addition, excessive internet use can lead to health-related problems such as eye strain, poor posture, and mental stress. This effect not only affects individuals’ physical well-being but also contributes to issues like addiction and reduced productivity in the long term, making the problem more difficult to reverse.

In conclusion, growing internet dependence is primarily caused by technological advancement and the digitalisation of essential services, and it results in social and health-related consequences. If these underlying factors remain unaddressed, the negative effects are likely to intensify in the future.
