Nowadays, there are many discussions surrounding overtime at the workplace. Many people are increasingly spending more time at work than at home. In my opinion, I believe this tendency has both positive and negative effects, but the disadvantages are more dramatic.
On the one hand, there are some positive aspects of overtime at the workplace. First of all, a major advantage is increasing productivity. The employees using more time at work can help achieve higher output and efficiency, so bringing more benefits for the business and the economy. For example, in many tech companies, employees who work longer hours are able to complete the tasks, and the deadline to contribute to the faster development of new products. As a result, this not only helps the company grow, but also meets the needs of life. Another important merit is job security. This is because employees who stay late to finish projects can be recognized, learned new skills, gained experience. Therefore, they can maintain job stability and great promotion opportunities.
On the other hand, I think that the disadvantages eclipse the advantages. The main drawback of working overtime is affecting the work-life balance. The reason for this is that people are spending more time on work, so they have less time for their family, their friends, and entertainment activities. For instance, many employees in Japan are known to work longer hours and stay late in the office, so they have little time for family or to pursue other interests. As a consequence, this lack of balance led to increase in the rate of depression and decline in overall life satisfaction. Additionally, working overtime caused many health issues. When working longer hours, people can feel stressed, burned out, which can lead to heart disease, insomnia, and sedentary life. Furthermore, another demerit is a decrease quality of the products. Because employees work excessively without proper rest, their concentration and attention tend to decline. For example, in industries, overworked factory workers may become tired and less attentive, causing assembly products to be incorrect. This can result in faulty goods reaching the market, and customer complaints, product recalls, or even financial losses.
In conclusion, the fact that employees are spending longer hours in the workplace has brought more disadvantages than advantages. Therefore, both individuals and employees need to maintain a healthy work-life balance to ensure long-term well-being and quality of productivity.
