Some would argue that social media has provided the common people with a platform to raise their voice and made the society more democratic, while other believe that it has largely created misinformation and rift between different communtities. Although the latter is true, but in my opinion the former out-weighs it by a lot.
Digital platforms like Instagram, Twitter etc. have provided the opportunity to the public to voice their opinions against the government and its representatives. This has brought a massive change even in countries that were deep rooted in corruption. For example, the student protests in India against the NEET examination leaks that led to 6 students taking their life by suicide. No action was taken for months, people felt the law and order had failed them which led to the massive uprise of the movement using social networks. Students protested for days, filming the brutality of police against them, and at last the authorities had no option other that bowing down to their demands.
This is one of the numerous examples where the public used the digita media to reach the right ears.
But every technology that exists on the face of this planet has its pros and cons. One of the con of these communities is the spreading of fake news at a lightning speed. These pieces of media target the fear factor of humans and take advantage. More views on these platforms transforms to more money the creator makes, and that leads to the bad elements of the society misusing it. Governments around the world are imposing strict laws and regulations against this. For example, the Indian parliament has setup a special department to cater the spread of misinformation named the cyber cell. This has led to far more criminals being caught than in the past .
In Conclusion, even though the bad elements of misuse digital platforms to spread worng information, I firmly believe the power that it has provided to the public to voice their concerns is a far bigger advantage.
