Band 7+: In many countries the cost of living is rising. What are the effects on individuals and society? What measures can be taken to deal with this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, the cost of living has increased more than ever before. While this trend may pose some challenges for individuals and society, such as psychological issues and an increased crime rate, I believe there are various ways to combat this problem.

Higher living costs present certain drawbacks for both the population and the community. One of them is heightened mental health problems. This is because when people live in areas where living expenses have surged, they are more likely to struggle meeting their basic needs, including housing, food, commuting, and utilities, let alone enjoying a comfortable lifestyle. This can ultimately not only negatively affect their financial stability but also compromise their psychological well-being due to the heavy financial burden. Another downside of rising living expenses is the increasing crime rate. If individuals encounter financial difficulties due to the high cost of living, many may feel compelled to commit criminal activities to cover their daily expenses.

Nonetheless, there are different ways in which the problem of the high cost of living could be tackled. On a governmental scale, it is essential to minimize the cost of living. This can be accomplished by reducing taxes and utility costs, increasing salaries in both the private and public sectors, creating more job opportunities, and controlling the prices of basic goods. On an individual level, it is important to reduce one’s cost of living. This can be done by budgeting, improving financial literacy, reducing non-essential spending, and using public services. Without the implementation of these measures, this situation will continue to grow.

In conclusion, although the problem of increased cost of living presents some disadvantages for both residents and society regarding mental well-being and higher crime rates, I believe there are numerous methods to deal with this issue.
