Nowadays, the decline of courtesy towards the elderly is a phenomenon which happens globally. Younger generations no longer act politely toward older people as they used to. They do not even greet, bow, shake hands, and speak politely to them anymore. From my perspective, the cause of this rude behavior is inappropriate social media use, and as a consequence, they have started to behave impolitely.
First and foremost, one of the reasons for the lack of politeness is the misuse of the internet. There are numerous advantages to social media if someone uses it and filters the content properly. However, many internet users, especially children, have not yet developed the ability to determine whether the content they consume is good or bad for them. For instance, a lot of short videos on TikTok and YouTube contain cursing and provide examples of acting insolently, and consequently, they imitate it blatantly without thinking about whether it is right or wrong.
These kinds of videos persuade them to think that acting rudely is impressive and will gain them respect from their friends, while in reality, it is totally wrong. Moreover, If this kind of behavior is not stopped and addressed properly, it will make them become more disrespectful, such as shouting at their teachers, acting violently toward their parents, or even toward other senior citizens. As a result, the behavior becomes uncontrollable and can even lead to worse conditions.
In conclusion, using social media without screening the content can lead to a loss of respect toward older generations. Hence, it is important for society to use social media appropriately and for adults to guide them in choosing the right content.
