In modern times, many countries have established maternity leave policies, granting women the right not to work during the first month after childbirth in order to recover physically and take care of their babies. I believe that the advantages outweigh its disadvantages. Although it has some drawbacks, what is more important is that it benefits maternal and infant health and promotes family harmony.
Firstly, from the perspective of a women’s physiological recover and the healthy growth of newborns, maternity leave is necessary/essential. Whether it is natural childbirth or cesarean section, childbirth poses a significant challenge to a woman’s body, and mother need a period of time to rest and recovery. Maternity leave provides mothers with an opportunity to rest peacefully and adjust their physical condition, laying a solid foundation for subsequence parenting tasks. Furthermore, newborns require their mothers’ attentive care and breastfeeding during the initial period after birth. Maternity leave ensures that mothers have sufficient time to stay by their infant’s side, providing necessary attention and affection.
Secondly, maternity leave plays a crucial role in promoting family harmony. During the period when women are on maternity leave, her husband can share parental responsibilities, such as changing diapers and comforting a crying baby, experiencing the difficulties and challenges involved. This effectively deepens the parent-child bond, enhance mutual understanding and communication between spouses, thereby strengthening the martial relationship and fostering family harmony.
However, for small enterprises, their operational costs increase significantly, as they not only need to pay salaries and maternity benefits to the employee on leave, as well as find temporary replacements to cover the work. Additionally, some women may worry that when returning to their jobs after maternity leave, their original positions or career opportunities may no longer exist, leading to disruption in their professional development.
In conclusion, although the maternity leave has some shortcomings, in the long run, its advantages far outweigh its disadvantage.
