In this day and age, several nations have given women the right to take maternity leave from their jobs for a few months to take care of their newborn children. While many are of the opinion that this can have numerous drawbacks, I personally think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
It is true that taking a leave from jobs can have many disadvantages. Taking maternity leave means women won’t be able to work for a while. As they are unable to participate in money-making activities, they can’t make money for a particular period of time. Money, on the other hand, is a necessary tool in order to purchase and invest in material stuff that can ensure the child’s development. As a result, this may put more pressure on their partner to work overtime or find a side job with a view to compensating for the amount of money that can’t be produced during their leave. Also, when mothers take a leave from their jobs, their positions remain practically vacant. Some corporations are concerned that the ability to conduct important tasks will decrease as they come back. Consequently, they may take advantage of this situation and recruit other employees to take their jobs without the permission of the predecessor, leaving the mothers losing their jobs.
Though there are undoubtedly some demerits, women taking a short-term leave for the sake of their children still offers several merits. In the first months, newborns need supervision and care of the adults in order to develop healthily and be safe from possible danger, as they clearly cannot take care of themselves. The presence of mothers can provide just the right support and monitor for the child. If taking maternity leave is an available option for women, this need of infants can be satisfied. Additionally, after childbirth, women may suffer from tiredness, exhaustion or worse, possible complications which result from the process of giving birth. A short-term absence from work can offer mothers not only a sufficient amount of time to heal and recover from their childbirth but also giving them enough energy to take care of their newborns. Moreover, women are able to allocate more time for their children and engage in numerous activities with their newborns. Spending more time with their kids, women are given the opportunity to understand the personality and behaviours of their children. This might lead to them experiencing a sense of love and connection, therefore improving the relationship and attitude of the mothers towards the infants.
To conclude, taking a maternity leave from the jobs for some time, while having some disadvantages, still provides the mother and her children with multiple benefits, from improving their relationship to securing the child’s general well-being.
