The whole concept of marriage has always been a matter of importance, while diverse distinctions of this process or status have varied across the globe. Perhaps, one has to admit that women were indeed forced to get married for the sake of financial security at some point in history. Yet, in general, I wish to contend that today both men and women are reluctant formally register their relationships, due to a number of reasons.
First off, in my subjective opinion, many nuances of the past are being unduly demonized these days. In fact, modern radical movements of various kinds endeavour to bitterly criticize too many customs and norms that prevailed and functioned for centuries. One of the most criticized matters seems to be the institution of marriage. To elaborate, many openly declare that in the past women would only marry men to survive. Worse still, it is said by many that females had no real choice, being simply an object of trading. Perhaps, there is some truth to be found in these words; however, one has to ask why such aspects of history should be so widely discussed in the 21st century. Speaking objectively, the world has never been a perfect place, with discrimination and violence being present in each and every decade. For instance, people of colour were discriminated for ages and still are in some regions, not to mention inequality in terms of wealth, titles, power and social status. By the same token, it is possible to assume that men would marry women in past purely to satisfy their sexual needs and have children who could take care of him and continue his trade; yet, now males feel no real need to get married, inasmuch as, in this day and, they can see everything they wish on ‘OnlyFans’ or elsewhere, and it is much easier to find escort ladies, without the need to make any commitments. Also, men can open a reliable bank account or invest in cryptocurrency in order to secure their future, as well as comfortable, pleasurable retirement, while so many women position themselves as ‘child-free,’ being of no interest to pragmatic and conservative males, if one could be that bold and dare to exaggerate the case. Therefore, the statement presented above lacks open-mindedness and objectiveness.
