Band 7+: In many countries, young people are choosing to delay marriage and focus on their careers instead. Some people see this as a positive development, while others believe it has negative consequences for society. Discuss both views and give your own opinion

The growing preference for delaying major life decisions has become a very common occurrence amongst young people. This growing trend tells us how different our priorities are from our parents’ generation, whose main goal was to reach certain milestones as soon as possible. Nevertheless, I believe that every person tends to choose the way that suits them best. That’s why I hesitate to say whether or not it had a positive or a negative impact.

One of the major reasons young people postpone plans is fear. Fear of not succeeding, fear of not meeting the expectations of others, especially when others – are your parents. For instance, not everyone can afford to pay full price for a house at once, they usually take out a loan. They may worry about losing their financial stability of being unable to pay off their loan. Consequently, fear is one of the main reasons why young people postpone major life decisions.

On the one hand, it seems like a good impact on our lives, because we have become more thorough with making our own decisions. For example, in the past it wasn’t even a question to have already been married by the age of 20. However, that was the minimum age, others would not be surprised by you living by the societal norms such as having a house, children and a wife/husband at that age. Fortunately, we have changed and are now more mature than before. With that maturity we feel more comfortable to take our time and not rush just for someone else’s approval.

On the other hand, it has a negative effect too. There’s a large number of obstacles that young adults face, one of them is severe anxiety about making crucial decisions. That happens mostly due to their upbringing, they just were not taught about the ordinariness of the situation and that everybody faces challenges. However, once you turn 18 everything is in your hands, even if it’s complicated and if you’re feeling insecure. It’s a part of your life and you should always remember that it is you – who decides when you’re ready.

In conclusion, I would lean towards it having a good development because compared to the past, people nowadays feel less rushed and experience less pressure from others. Although, there are still some factors that hold us back from pursuing our dreams and ambitions. Ignoring them and carrying on is the best approach for us.
