Nowadays, commercialized agriculture brings both advantages and disadvantages to local farmers and the national economy in many developing countries. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion. From my perspective, I lean towards the former view.
It is true that commercialization brings a positive impact to local farmers. The primary reason is that it helps farmers sell more products, so that they can generate higher revenue from high-value products such as crops, corn, and coffee when exporting to neighbouring countries like: the USA, China, Malaysia and Thailand, which have a high demand for these products. As a result, commercialized agriculture not only improves local farmers’ living standards but also facilitates higher income for the national economy. For instance, developing nations with high population density, such as Vietnam, often invest more in agriculture, especially rice and coffee production, which creates jobs in food processing, transportation, and logistics. Increased agricultural exports boost export revenue and strengthen economic development. Furthermore, commercialization helps modernize agriculture by boosting technological application and enhancing production capacity.
However, commercialization also brings certain disadvantages. For local farmers, increased demand for agricultural products may lead to a wider income gap between rich and poor farmers, as wealthy farmers have more money to expand their production or export to foreign countries. In addition, farmers may focus solely on high-profit crops such as coffee, which can reduce the amount of land used to grow staple foods like rice. As a result, this may lead to food shortages and affect the country’s security. On the other hand, commercialization may increase income inequality. Richer regions often develop faster than poorer regions, widening the regional income gap and negatively affecting the national economy.
In conclusion, although commercialized agriculture has both advantages and disadvantages in many developing countries, I firmly believe that its overall benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
