In many nations, domestic festivals and customs are being replaced by global festivities and commercial events. Some people claim that it is an inevitable evolution, whereas others believe that it destroys cultural identity. Personally, I believe that this development breaks cultural identity and leads to loss of cultural values.
On the one hand, some people say that it is an inevitable evolution, which evolved from a global cooperation and social development. Nowadays, with the rise of the internet, social media, and international travels, people feel more connected to a global community, which makes people especially young generation are more embracing global events for entertainment, leisure or out of respect. Take Valentine’s day, for example, couples across the world celebrates this day spending time with their beloved no matter of nationality or religion. Although, I reckon this kind of movement may lead to a loss of cultural identity.
On the other hand, other people believe this can break cultural identity and lead to loss of cultural values. While many people are embracing a global events, indigenous rituals, traditional stories, and customs may become forgotten, leading to a neglect to a cultural events by people. Therefore, the significance of travelling and tourism might decline. For instance, in many places, traditional romantic or spring festivals such as Qixi festival in China get sidelined because massive global marketing campaigns for Valentine’s Day take over all the shops and media.
To summarise, in many nations commercial and global festivities are taking over domestic events and while some people believe that this is a unescapable evolution, I strongly believe that this can cause danger to cultural identity of nations.
