In recent years, car ownership becomes more common across the globe due to availability of private vehicles. Although this seems to be a beneficial development, I strongly agree that there are drawbacks as well.
One of the major downsides of the growing number of car owners is traffic congestion. A twenty-minute drive can take up to one hour because of traffic jams, especially during rush hours. This not only wastes people’s time but also cause greater fuel consumption. A simple example for this is Baku where traffic congestion has become a daily-life problem.
Another serious drawback is the unfavorable impact on the environment. With more cars on the road, gas emissions are siring sharply, especially carbon dioxide which is leading cause of global warming. As fuel consumption continues to increase, causing pollution in both air and roads. For instance, cities such as Dehli and Bangkok experience serious pollution and health problems, due to excessive car usage.
Last but not least, an increase in private vehicles discourage people from physical activity. People who used to walk, cycle or use public transport are likely to choose private vehicle, even for short distances. This would cause health problems such as obesity, heart disease or any other health problems. In many sovereign countries, a lot of people are suffering from these health problems due to lack of physical activity.
In conclusion, while car ownership may seem to be great thing, the rising number of private vehicles across the global creates serious challenges. From environmental to health problems, the negative consequences are inevitable. The government and people should work together so as to reduce number of personal cars.
