Most of the societies in the world are occupied by people with different cultural background. In such societies, people of different cultures interact on multiple levels, be it local or international, forming a diverse community. In the following paragraphs, discussion about whether advantages outweigh disadvantages of living in a multicultural society is done.
There are multiple advantages of living in a multicultural society. One of the fore most important advantage is that people get to know about different cultures. They get to know about practices and believes of a particular culture. For example in Pakistan, a multi cultural country, most of the schools arrange an annual programme where students represent different cultures of Pakistan. Students dress according to the specific culture and speak in its specific language. For example, if a student is representing Punjabi culture, he will dress up in shalwar kameez and will give speech in Punjabi telling details about this specific culture. This helps in promoting different cultures and eventually creating a sense of respect and good bond between people of variety of cultures.Also helping in forming a peaceful society where all the cultures are promoted equally and are it’s practices are kept alive in the future.
On the other hand, living in a multicultural society can have few disadvantages. In a community, different cultures are promoted differently. Some cultures might be promoted more than others, creating sense of insecurity for the minority group. For example in Pakistan, Punjabi Culture is promoted more as compared to others. This could lead to people of other culture feel insecure and chances of clash in such situations is more. Moreover, Each Culture have different language creating a language barrier between people. This could disrupt communication. Due to different believes and practices of each culture, people could have difference of opinion. This could disrupt the bond and lead to arguments.
To conclude it can be said that living in multi cultural society have equal advantages and disadvantages. It depends on the person how one handles the situation and accept people of other culture.
