It is stated that an increasing number of countries have faced corruption recently. This is because the cultural factors of many countries encourage bribery among citizens; however, this can be solved by enacting rigorous anti-corruption laws.
The primary reason for the high corruption rate is social norms and practices in some countries. Many countries have different cultural norms, which sometimes can be inappropriate or against regions’ existing laws. Also, people do not even know that with these traditions, they are significantly damaging the transparency of state organizations in society. Because breaking this kind of law has already become a tradition for them. For example, in Uzbekistan, gifting to teachers or doctors in exchange for some benefits is seen as customary rather than corrupt. Therefore, such customary practices can significantly contribute to the increase in the rate of corruption.
One possible solution to tackle this problem is implementing strict laws against corruption. If people are punished with severe penalties, they will become aware that these actions are illegal and may be considered crimes. That is, many people cannot afford high penalties and are forced not to commit corruption. Because the fear of severe consequences can discourage individuals from engaging in corrupt activities. For instance, Singapore has effectively reduced corruption through a combination of stringent laws and strong enforcement, resulting in one of the lowest corruption rates in the world. Thus, implementing rigorous anti-corruption laws can lead to a substantial reduction in corruption levels within a country.
To conclude, cultural practices in some countries can play a significant role in boosting high levels of corruption. Nevertheless, this issue can be effectively mitigated through the enactment and enforcement of stringent anti-corruption laws.
