Although this benefits many regions economically, it has negatively impacted the environment, causing social concerns. This essay will look at both perspectives, suggesting the conclusion in favour of the former.
Regarding positive economic outcomes, oil projects create job prospects, requiring a variety of workers. This is because the industry is in demand for engineers, technicians, construction and transport workers, and support services. Leading to reduction of unemployment by improving living standards, less-developed regions influence positively on a country’s economy. Moreover, governments might earn money through taxes. Not only does the usage of the revenue to fund public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure expand economic rates, but it also benefits social satisfaction. As a result, oil drilling operations play a significant role in financial and social aspects of a country.
In terms of concerns and doubts, oil drilling can destroy natural habitats, disrupting wildlife and vegetation. This is because construction of drilling facilities, roads, pipelines often require clearing large areas of land, which can reduce biodiversity and damage fragile ecosystems. Furthermore, accidents such as oil leaks may contaminate water, soil, and coastal areas. For instance, in remote regions, if oil is burned, it would release greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming and may lead to higher carbon emissions.
