Everybody craves freedom, even teenagers. Even though people might believe tha the implementation of the curfew in some areas of the US for teenagers at night is against the principle of freedom, I believe it is a great initiative because it provides a safety net for them against crime and prevents them from getting into illegal activities such as drugs.
Firstly, the crime is on a rise in these areas where the curfew has been imposed, as informed by the government. Having a curfew in place at night or having an adult accompanying a teen reduces the chances of them being a victim of a crime. This would act as a deterrent to avoid crimes such as kidnapping and murders. It would be a great stress reliever for parents who are always worried about their children when they go out during nighttime.
Secondly, kids between the age of 13 to 19 years are more susceptible to getting involved in illegal activities such as drugs during the night as most of the drug peddlers are active during that time. Also, the chance of meeting people involved in crimes and gang activities is higher at that time because it is easier to execute these things as the number of police personnel are less during night than the day. Another reason is that teenagers can be persuaded and brain washed easily and they can be an easy target for the people in charge of these criminal activities. Being out during the night provides an easy access to these people to influence the teenagers into illegal activities.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that the decision to impose curfew is a great step towards improving the safety of teenagers and preventing them from getting into crime. However, necessary steps have to be taken into consideration to make this curfew a success so that the teens don’t feel that their freedom is being hampered by it.
