In this day and age, it is believed by a number of people that everyone should get access to the Internet at no cost from the governments. However, others assume that we need to pay for Internet access. From my point of view, I gravitate towards the view that governments should offer free Internet to all individuals.
On the one hand, people should also pay for Internet access due to several reasons. One of the feasible reasons is that governments have limited financial resources, so these should be prioritized for public services, such as healthcare or education. If governments have to focus on both Internet access and public services, the amount of tax can grow. As a result, residents have to pay extra costs to access the Internet.
On the other hand, numerous people believe that governments should provide free Internet for all individuals. The main reason is that people living in remote areas can study or work at their convenience. This is because they do not have enough money to cover their bills, so the cost of the Internet is unaffordable. If governments require payment for Internet access, they will have trouble accessing new knowledge and making progress in their work or study.
Another reason is that the Internet has become an essential service. The Internet helps people keep up with up-to-date news around the world and expand everyone’s horizons. For example, people can send messages to people around the world without waiting for a long time like in the past, so individuals save more time.
In conclusion, although asking users to pay for Internet access might decline pressure on public finances, I believe that governments still should offer free Internet, especially for low-income families, because it is crucial for education or employment. Therefore, they should provide at least basic Internet access.
