In several countries, undergraduates would prefer living with their families while pursuing a university education. Meanwhile, students from other countries decide to get accommodation far away from home, in the same city as their university. Although living independently away from home may bring several challenges, I still believe that students can have a large number of significant lessons and experiences.
On the one hand, independence, responsibility, and problem-solving skills can be improved when living on their own. Students can learn to manage their time, take responsibility for daily chores , and deal with the difficulties of living on their own. Additionally, students can be exposed to a variety of cultures and communications when they inhabit another environment, which will help them improve their life experiences. The best way for students to gain a broader perspective on the world around them and improve their adaptability and social skills is to step out of the family’s safe zone, as they have to face a variety of life situations on their own.
On the other hand, financial burdens and loneliness can arise when they live separately from their household. Without financial support, students may have to earn a living and pay for accommodation, food, and many other daily expenses by themselves. This can lead to stress and distraction from education, which further decreases the quality of their academic performance. Additionally, being away from loved ones can also result in feelings of loneliness and homesickness, impacting their mental health since they may not have the emotional support and feel separate from their family’s love and care. This lack of emotional connection can make it difficult for students to deal with the challenges of university life, as they may feel isolated without their family’s presence.
In conclusion, although living independently from family while attending university brings some drawbacks for students, they can gain various lessons and significant experiences, encouraging life skills and personal growth from these challenges.
