Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: In some countries students pay their own university and college fees, however in other countries government pays their fees. Do the advantages outweigh its disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The cost of third-level education has increased significantly over the years. While in some countries, students are responsible for their college expenses, in other nations, government bears their costs. I strongly disagree that the benefits of a government-sponsored education system exceed its drawbacks, as it enhances financial burden on national authorities and students might misuse this free support.

To begin with, higher education has become more expensive than ever before. As a result, many individuals suggest that the government should pay university fees. However, national authorities in many countries are already overwhelmed with other crucial responsibilites, such as free healthcare and reliable public transportation system; therfore, individuals should take care of their own college expenses. If governments start allocating funds to universities for free education, they will either have to rise the tax rates or have to compromise the quality of public services. For instance, Japan, despite being popular for free healthcare, it has never offered a free education to collge students to ensure consistency in basic services.

Moreover, many young people prefer doing jobs immediately after completing their school life instead of enrolling in a degree program, particularly due to a lack of interest in study. If governments offer free education, almost every student is likely to register for a college degree. This situation would not only enhance competition in every class, but also disturb the entire education system by demanding more faculties and classrooms. One clear example of this situation is the rise of unemployed engineers in India, motivated by the government’s free education policy.

In conclusion, a government-funded higher education system would not only detrimental to the government, as it will significantly rise the demand for fund, but also has several negative impacts on the education system, such as overwhelmed classrooms. From my perspective, individuals ought to pay their university fees.
