In recent years, there has been ongoing debate regarding the appropriate voting age. Some countries have reduced it to 16, while others maintain it at 18 or even older. Admittedly, lowering the voting age will strengthen democracy and political engagement in youth, while I firmly believe it is an unwise decision due to concerns about lack of maturity and political awareness.
On the one hand, one of the main reasons why government should grant teenagers the right to vote is that it strengthens democracy. Teenagers being engaged in politics early instills a sense of responsibility and eventually leads to youth becoming full members of society. Countries that have adopted such system, like Austria and Scotland have reported an increased voter turnout among young people, indicating a stronger political culture. Moreover, allowing 16-year-olds to vote fosters political engagement from an early age. Many teens are now well informed about political issues due to accessibility of internet and social media. By authorizing them to vote, governments encourage civic engagement and ensure that young voices are heard in shaping policies that directly impact them, such as education and climate change.
On the other hand, adolescents generally lack the necessary maturity to make responsible political decisions. At 16, individuals are still undergoing significant cognitive and emotional development. They opt for emotional influence rather than rational analysis. Unlike adults, younger population has limited real-world experience in domains such as taxation, employment, and economic policies, which are crucial factors in political decision-making. Additionally, youths are extremely susceptible to external influence. With the dominance of social media in their daily lives, they are more likely to be swayed by deceptive claims, viral trends, or the opinions of influencers rather than conducting independent research. Only if teenagers surpass political manipulations, can they make integral elections.
In conclusion, lowering the voting age has both advantages and disadvantages. While it can promote civic awareness and consolidate democracy, concerns about maturity and susceptibility to influence cannot be neglected. In my opinion, the voting age should remain at 18, as it aligns with legal adulthood and ensures that voters have a sufficient level of experience and independence to make informed choices.
