The controversy surrounding increase in advertisements in some countries which try to persuade children to buy their products has always been a topic of discussion, has now reached a fever pitch in society. While some argue that these advertisements are for educational and entertainment purposes, I believe as parents claims, these ads are unfair means to persuade children.
Analyzing the statement, it is evident that parents are concerned about the advertisements shown to their children for several reasons. First and foremost, parents think products that are advertised serve no benefits and cause only harm to their child. They argue many of the snacks that companies publicize cause health problems which these organizations often hide their commercials. For instance, fruit candies are not made with pure organic fruits it only contains essence of that fruit with larger quantity of sugar and preservative. In addition, it is pertinent to mention that children are more impressionable and less capable of critical thinking. They may not understand the persuasive intent behind these ads and can easily be molded.
However, there are numerous factors which eases parents claims. To begin, commercial often serve as information for children and their parents about new product, services, and experiences that might be beneficial. For example, ads for educational toys or family friendly activities can be useful. Secondly, ultimately parents have control over their children consume. They are able to make choices for the use of commercial products which are suitable for their child.
To sum up, although there are several benefits that these organizations list in their ads, I believe parents argument holds much more ground with major evidence backing up them.
