Band 8+: In some countries younger people are neglecting their right to vote. What problems does this cause and what are some of the possible solution?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The government plays a significant role in an economy. In today’s world, in several nations, the younger generation does not place much importance on their right to vote. This essay will discuss not only the issues behind this trend but also suggest some measures to mitigate the problem.

To begin with, neglecting the right to vote, ignoring civic responsibilities, and declining engagement in governmental processes contributes to the weakening of democracy. When citizens fail to exercise their right to vote, they lose the ability to choose a government that aligns with their interests. This, in turn, diminishes individuals’ interests and leads to unavoidable conflicts within society. Additionally, if young people do not prioritize their civic duties, society becomes aimless, which directly affects the nation’s growth. However, this issue can be addressed by implementing appropriate measures, such as educational institutions creating awareness and educating students about their responsibilities to society. This approach would generate significant interest among young people, encouraging them to engage in political, social, and economic activities. For instance, countries like the USA, Britain, and Germany mandate political education up to the higher secondary level, which fosters a general understanding of rights and responsibilities among young people.

Furthermore, the failure of young individuals to exercise their right to vote leads to poor leadership. If voter turnout is low, there will be less representation from citizens, resulting in diminished competition among leaders. Consequently, incompetent and misguided leaders may gain power, leading to poor decision-making and damaging the nation’s international reputation. To combat this, society should assign small roles and responsibilities to individuals, such as maintaining growth data and encouraging political participation. This would instill a sense of duty among individuals, making it easier for them to assess and choose future leaders. For example, a report published by the National Youth and Government organization indicates that more than 70% of individuals show interest when they are assigned responsibilities that allow them to contribute to their country.

In conclusion, the youth’s disregard for their right to vote leads to various problems, such as the weakening of democracy, poor decision-making, and unfair practices in the nation. However, this issue can be addressed by raising awareness among individuals and encouraging their participation in governmental processes.
