It is true that people are living longer in developed countries, and this has incurred heavy burdens on people and society. Nonetheless, many actions could be taken to decrease the negative effects of this phenomenon.
A wide range of people are exposed to the actual problems associated with the increasing average life expectancy, including the elders themselves to their families. Living to an old age comes with numerous chronic diseases and disabilities that not only suffer the person but also put pressure on the people who take care of them. Additionally, the society as a whole is affected as it must invest substantial amounts of financial resources in the health and the well-being of its older generation. For example, state hospitals and nursing homes are some places that accept many older clients each year and put heavy expenses on the government’s shoulders.
Dealing with the indicated problems require a multifaceted plan which involves participation of the elderly, their families, and government. Firstly, we can employ older people in profitable activities, such as making handcrafts or knitting, to make them responsible for some parts of their monetary needs. Secondly, families must be more active in supporting their older relatives, because due to their old family bondings they can provide a better emotional and financial support. And finally, governments must set plans and rules that encourage elders and their families to incorporate in the suggested activities. For instance, some special plans should be implemented to help promote the older people’s products and services.
In conclusion, communities are facing with the problems related to aging population, and to address these problems, calculated plan should be organized.
