There is no doubt that development and housing design have a considerable bearing on urban landscapes. Therefore, the importance of house styles has been emphasized more than ever before. While a school of thought holds that newly constructed houses should follow traditional styles, others claim that citizens should be granted the freedom to design their house. While this trend has certain benefits, I would contend that they are eclipsed by more significant drawbacks. Both views are justifiable, but I am personally toward the latter.
On the one hand, it is understandable why some people support maintaining traditional house design in the local area; these traditional styles have been used for decades throughout the region. By doing so, homeowners can reuse existing blueprints, which eliminates the cost of designing. This situation can manifest itself starkly in sparsely populated rural areas, where residents tend to reuse available layouts and blueprints to avoid spending on professional design services. Furthermore, traditional architecture can reflect history communities, values and climatic adaptations of the region, preserving its cultural heritage in the face of modern changes.
On the other hand, there are compelling reasons why I believe it would be unwise to overlook the benefits of personalized modern home designs. One of the most significant advantages is that contemporary designs offer greater flexibility in incorporating environmentally friendly materials and technologies, such as solar panels, green roofs, and natural ventilation systems, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability. This trend is particularly evident in urban areas like Ho Chi Minh City, where an increasing number of homeowners are opting for “green homes” to reduce electricity consumption and protect the environment. Additionally, many traditional materials are either no longer widely available or are prohibitively expensive for house construction. Therefore, modern designs help overcome challenges in sourcing suitable materials, reducing construction delays and additional costs.
In conclusion, although the notion that traditional house styles can bring a range of benefits to the local area is valid, I would opine that the importance of building with our own style should not be downplayed and offer far greater benefits to urban landscapes
