Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: In the past, people stored knowledge in books. Nowadays people store knowledge on the Internet. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The development of technology has brought immense adjustments to knowledge storage, while people used to write down their understanding on paper and publish books, it is now mainly conducted on the internet. This essay will discuss the merits and demerits of this fashion before concluding that the prior outweighs the latter.

On the one hand, storing information on the internet would eventually weaken our independence as mankind relies more on the help of artificial intelligence. The act of searching and sorting pieces of information would be done by tools beforehand, hence this crucial ability would someday vanish and we would consequently become more dependent. This explains why younger generations, such as Gen Z and Gen Alpha, tend to look up most inquiries on the internet rather than individually brainstorming or conducting any readings.

On the other hand, the internet offers a more flexible and widespread approach to knowledge compared to traditional paperworks. Due to the fact that most parts of the world have access to the internet nowadays, people can rapidly apprehend new information on a variety of topics, thus facilitating the process of learning. For instance, Ivy Leagues published a number of online courses for international citizens to study from home regardless of their location, age or financial status. Thus, assisting people worldwide to broaden their horizon without having to deal with far distance or costly tuition fees.

In conclusion, the tendency to store information on the internet could subsequently lead to dependence and inability to personally do research. However, its the perks far outweigh this drawback, as it enables people to approach knowledge despite a number of obstacles, thus spreading knowledge to audiences globally.
