In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of people spending time on electronic devices. This essay will explore the main reason behind this trend, before arguing that this is a largely harmful development.
One primary reason why more individuals spend most of their time on the phone is that we live in a fast-paced and technology-driven world, where almost every aspect of our lives links to the internet. In diverse domains of life, such as workplaces and universities, many individuals depend on their phones because of the demand to interact with customers and coworkers in the offices and online communication with professionals and classmates at the universities. Moreover, people tend to scroll through on their social media accounts in their spare times, especially to relieve stress during periods of depression and anxiety. For instance, recent research shows that people who are prone to depression spend most of their time on smartphones and computers, watching various tv-series and movies to escape from the reality of the outside world.
Despite its widespread presence in the modern world, I firmly believe this trend has prodominantly negative effects. Spending more time on phones, especially on social media accounts and the internet eventually leads an addictive behavior towards it. Not only does this addiction affect mental health problems, but also contribute to a dysfunctional lifestyle which involves sedentary lifestyle and isolation from society. Furthermore, this problem not only leads to physiological issues but also contribute to physical health problems, such as deterioration in eyesight.
Many studies indicate that health issues such as myopia result from excessive screen time at a very young age.
In conclusion, while spending time on smartphones and computers may stem from personal and social reasons, its impact on physical and physiological problems makes it a largely negative development.
