In recent years, the influence of famous figures on young people has become a significant topic of discussion worldwide. Although there are a few potential downsides to the effects celebrities have on the young, I opine that this trend is primarily a positive development. The following essay will discuss both the pros and cons of famous role-models for the young generation.

Building on the idea of materialism, some famous individuals might bestow unfavorable impacts on the young. One notable effect is that young people are shifting their focus towards superficial values due to over-exposure to the luxurious lives of celebrities. Famous figures, as invasively portrayed on social medias, usually flaunt their wealth with high-end fashions items, cars, and exotic experience. These images, wether delivered intentionally or indirectly, can lead the young into thinking money is the only definition of success, which might drift them away from other important ethical values. In addition, celebrities can ignite a sense of insecurity to the young by exhibiting unrealistic ideas of how life is. Younger people might develop a feeling of worthlessness when comparing the fancy lifestyle idols have to their mundane one, which can significantly deteriorate their confidence and demotivate them from trying.

Needless to say, the young generation benefit greatly from looking up to the right famous figures as they set a good example for the young to follow. Firstly, famous role models are outstanding embodiment of inspiration. The stories of how athletes, artists, and entrepreneurs overcome their challenges to reach success are good examples of hard-work and perseverance. Consequently, they uplift the youngs’ will to strive for success. Secondly, many celebrities nowadays are using their influence to advocate for serious matters that need attention from the mass. For instance, Leonardo DiCaprio – an award-winning actor, is actively using his platforms to spread awareness on environmental protection to his followers, which include a number of youngsters Hence, by following famous figures, the young generation are informed about important issues and influenced to take actions.

In conclusion, while the materialistic lifestyle of celebrities can have a few negative impacts on young people’s outlook on life, I am of the opinion that famous people are great role models since they inspire the young to persevere and act to solve societal problems.
