The growing traffic and air pollution due to the private cars is one of the most devastating problems that human beings are confronting but solving this problem is totally liable. Some people argue that increasing the price of petrol is the best way to handle these issues. I oppose this idea because it can make the social conditions unsustainable if the infrastructures are not ready for it.
One of the main reasons why the greenhouse gases emissions is rising is the growing number of private cars in the world. Especially in the overpopulated cities around the world such as Tehran, this problem is significant that every morning which the number of moving cars in the streets peaks, the sky’s color is totally brown. Therefore, by increasing the petrol prices, people’s tendency to use their car will fall inasmuch as it is less affordable than the public transportation.
Moreover, it helps gaining the using of electric vehicles. As people find these kinds of cars more affordable, they will replace the old ones by them and it will help us to reduce the air pollution due to the electric vehicles are more eco-friendly. Additionally the volume of noises in the streets will be decreased because these cars’ engines make less noises to work.
However, higher prices of petrol will increase the value of other prices too. While the majority of transportation system is based on fossil fuels, increasing the fuels prices will make the transportation more expensive than before. Since there is almost no product being made needless to transport anything, this idea will make a higher inflation in the market. It also causes the rising prices of vital systems needed to produce the renewable energies like solar panels. Thus it is logical to say this idea maybe harmful even for the sustainable development.
In conclusion, despite how helpful the increasing price of petrol is for reducing the greenhouse gases emissions and entering the electric vehicles to the people’s life, it may have more environmental costs to the society since more expensive transportation causes higher inflation in the market.
