Going on a holiday to a foreign land has become one of the most popular ways to spend your summer or winter holiday. Especially, with air travel you can find yourself on another continent in just a few hours. It all sounds wonderful, but I do think that in certain cities International tourism has been affecting them more negatively, than positively.
Having a huge crowd of people from a lot of foreign countries can bring certain problems to a city, one of them is security. A huge amount of tourism attracts burglars and pick pocketers. These criminals take the advantage of the huge crowd and in most cases, they are never found and charged. Specifically, in Italy this has become a huge problem in popular cities like: Rome, Milan, Venice, etc. This is also a big disadvantage for the local inhabitants who can’t feel safe in their own city anymore.
Another issue that has also affected a couple of European cities by these huge crowds of tourists are drugs. In party cities like Dubrovnik in Croatia the numbers of drug abuse are skyrocketing. The local people are mad at the government for letting foreign citizens flood the streets with all types of synthetic drugs. A city that used to represent the beautiful Mediterranean culture is now turning into an unsafe city not just for the local people, but also for the other tourists.
Cities that used to be safe and beautiful places to relax are turning into places that the locals can’t recognize. While International travelling is an awesome opportunity, the negative affects its carrying are starting to become huge problems.
