Band 6+: It has been claimed that workers over 50 are not responsive to rapidly changing ideas in the modern workplace and that for this reason younger workers are to be preferred. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In this drastically changing world, the demand required for the majority of the workforce is to adapt to a modernised society. However, for many elderly workers, this request seems to be difficult as they are unable to keep pace with the recent modifications of the workplace, this fact leads to the tendency of many youngsters being exploited. From my perspective, I do not totally agree with this status.

The first reason why I deem the oldies not so inefficient as people think is that they have a wide range of experience, intellect and skills in their work, which can partly outweigh their other downsides. Generally, experienced workers have dedicated most of their life to their contemporary occupation. Through this diligent career path, they must have accumulated an extensive amount of knowledge of the work; therefore, they might still be able to maintain the productivity in working. For instance, a large number of retired workers in Japan are willing to return to working in spite of their age problems. Consequently, it might seem uncharitable to say that elderly people are unnecessary in the present labour market.

On the other hand, despite those positive aspects of old workers, it is still undeniable that the youth are more preferred in most workplaces, considerably by virtue of age problems of the elderly. Obviously, having passed the mark of fifty means that a person is officially “old”, therefore he has to confront many nuisances about health. This status results in the inefficiency in working of many employees, when they are not rational and conscious enough. It can be seen that a majority of the workforce passing the retirement age, in other countries not including Japan, decides not to continue working due to their decreased health.

In conclusion, I do assume that the elderly people are still able to contribute their diligence to the community; however, realistically, they also have several disadvantages restricting them.
