Traditional careers are often viewed as a safe option for the sole reason that they provide assurance of sustaining a job, and at times are better paying. These fields are mostly deemed secure as they have a larger workforce, have been popularised over generations and provide the flexibility of practicing in recognised institutes or self-practice. In many countries, including India, multiple generations of a family take up roles such as doctors or lawyers, which guarantees jobs through contacts. Traditional roles are currently also less likely to be affected by artificial intelligence (AI). These roles have been prevalent for several hundreds of years, and therefore are accompanied by status and priviledge.
On the contrary, non-traditional industries focus on real time applications of these traditional areas or creative ideologies. Society has now progressed into the era of the Internet and AI too has much to offer. With such development, opting out of conventional careers seems natural. Today’s world no longer considers the sciences or commerce superior to the humanities, therefore, newer streams of work must be given similar importance.
Many a times, keeping in mind the priviledge and entitlement a conventional job has to offer, parents or elders force the younger population to give up their dreams of taking on a different path. This leads to increasing family tensions and fosters an environment of ignorance. Following a non-traditional path may not always assure immediate success. However, the ability to express and create encourages holistic development and retention in the workplace.
