Many people hold the belief that government agencies should prioritize expenditure on programs encouraging the pursuit of healthy lifestyle rather than treatment for current patients who are combating with sickness. As far as I am concerned, I completely oppose the above statement and this essay will elaborate two main reasons for my disagreement.
Firstly, there are numerous circumstances that allocating public money on health campaigns fails to prove its efficiency, making it is not a comprehensive measurement. In spite of fostering citizen’s awareness regarding adopting healthier habits, a multitude of innate diseases and fatal illnesses such as respiratory disorders or neurological issues can not be anticipated and averted thoroughly by regular exercises or balance diet. In addition, there is no control over nature, war and mishap. For instance, there is a number of traffic accidents everyday, resulting in minor injuries or even fatality. Another case in this point is the COVID pandemic which has struck the whole globe and wiped out families and communities, came without any preparations as well as prevention.
Secondly, the public subsidies of government play a fundamental role in endorsing the healthcare system to meet the standard and demands. With the ever-increasing patients, many of them have to suffer in substandard services and facilities in public hospitals since affording for private service is beyond their capabilities. Without a doubt, plenty of hospitals face the shortage of bed and medical practitioners, leading to a long queue for surgery or simply diagnosis. Furthermore, the availability of medical equipment and pharmaceutical products are essential in emergency or unforeseen cases. Taking the outbreak of COVID as an example, the amount of ventilators and kit tests can not fulfill the demand of the abrupt surge of patients.
In conclusion, while promoting healthy lifestyle is partially beneficial for citizens, providing subsidies for healthcare systems and patients who are suffering from illnesses should be high on the agenda.
