With the advancement of the internet and global online shopping platforms such as Amazon.com or Alibaba.com, consumers in many countries, including Viet Nam, can easily purchase products made in many different countries. It is obvious that while this trend has made international shopping much more convenient and accessible, it can come with several drawbacks. From my point of view, I do believe that the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages. The following essay will discuss this problem in more detail.
On the one hand, the ability to buy products from all over the world can offer numerous advantages. Firstly, with regard to consumers, it can give them access to a wide range of products that are not available domestically. For example, in Vietnam, people can order electronic devices or smartphones from the US because those things are not imported into Vietnam’s market yet. Additionally, international shopping allows consumers to purchase goods at a more competitive price. Global platforms like Amazon.com or Alibaba.com offer a vast range of products from different sellers and providers, which fosters competitions and drives down prices. Besides, global online shopping provides consumers with significant convenience. With a click of mouse, people can browse products, compare prices and easily complete purchases without traveling from one place to another, especially in bad weather conditions. Secondly, with regard to the whole society, this trend supports innovation and globalization. By purchasing goods from other countries, consumers indirectly support any companies that bring unique and high quality products to the global market. This exchange will boost fair competition and encourage local businesses to innovate their products, which benefits both consumers and companies.
However, this trend has some negative effects. First and foremost, consumers can get scammed when shopping online because they cannot verify the products physically. In case the products they receive do not come to their expectations or are not shipped, although consumers pay in advance, the complaint, refund requirement or compensation requirement may be not addressed quickly because there comes many challenges such as language barriers or different policies. Secondly, relying on foreign-made products can detrimentally affect domestic economies. When consumers prefer international retailers, it may reduce demand on locally produced goods. This could harm small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are unable to compete with global giants in terms of price, product range, or logistics. Gradually, this results in a decline in local industries and job losses, particularly in sectors depending on consumers’ purchases. Last but not least, this tendency poses a serious threat to the environment. Transporting products across borders often requires more layers of packaging for protection and significant energy, contributing to carbon emission and environment degradation.
In conclusion, the trend of purchasing goods from other countries can bring numerous merits for consumers and the whole society as mentioned above. Although there are risks for consumers, challenges for local businesses and environmental concerns, these issues can be tackled. Overall, the benefits of this trend outweigh the drawbacks.
