Many students around the world have started to leave science subjects and rather choose other lessons, such as arts, history and economy. This phenomenone aries due to the the side effect of science subjects to their stress level, as non-science subjects are taught in a more appealing methdos, attracting students to take these lessons. While higher attention projected to non-scientific-based subjects implies a positive development, this may positioning society in a risk, where insufficient scientists struggles to meet certain industry’s demands.
One of the main reasons behind the lack of interest to science from a student’s perspective is that maths, physics and chemistry subjects are usualy demanding, given the unlimited and challenging assignments. Homeworks and exams on science subjects are less enjoyable compared to tasks in arts or history which usually offer group assignments or book reviews, allowing pupils to engage with their peers and accomplishing tasks that are close to their hobbies. In contrast, to meet expected grades in math exams, as an example, students must conducted an adequate preparations with longer study hours to exercise with numerous math questions. This situation will dramatically contributes to student’s anxiety and frustation, resulting in science subjects as less appealing as these subjects lack of interacting and engaging learning methods, thus students prefer study ing more creatively-driven disciplines.
Another reasons to explain why science subjects become less attractive is that other non-scientific subjects profound more available in many schools, as recent’s education curriculum often includes interdisciplinary learning, such as combination of history and arts or antrophology and economy that meet student’s interest. With this learning innovation, students do not find science subject as a vital lesson to be taken as other options are widely opened.
While on one hand the growing interest non-STEM subjects implies a positive development, society may face challenges with the lack of science enthusiasts. Many countries realies heavily on technological advancement that requires high-quality scientists to support its programmes. When there are not sufficient scientists available, the governement will struggle to maintain country’s productivity which would effect a whole nation’s development, both economically and politically. Furthermore, society may lack of innovations to conduct their daily basis activities. Novel methods in agriculture, outer space exploration and advancement in public transportation are only a fraction of examples on how science is crucial, thus lack of expertise in these fields may occur a society stagnation, hindering technological progress to society’s development.
In conclusion, lesser student’s engagement with science subjects is a result to less captivating learning methods which has caused them to leave science and choose to study arts, history and economy. Although this may be beneficial in various aspects, the lack of enthusiasm in studying science may emerge issues in economy and technological progress of a society.
