Band 9: It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children. Is this a good way of providing work for others? Should people do these things themselves?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In modern society, it is increasingly common for individuals to outsource tasks such as domestic chores or childcare to others. While this practice can be seen as a way of creating employment opportunities, it also raises questions about personal responsibility and the importance of self-reliance. This essay will discuss both perspectives and provide a reasoned conclusion.

On one hand, hiring others to perform household tasks can be a practical and beneficial solution for both parties involved. For the employer, it allows them to focus on their careers or other priorities without being overwhelmed by daily responsibilities. For the employee, it offers a source of income and, in many cases, a stable job. For instance, domestic work and nanny services have become vital sources of employment in many countries, especially for individuals who may not have formal education or professional qualifications. In this sense, outsourcing personal tasks can contribute positively to the economy and reduce unemployment.

On the other hand, there are arguments that people should take responsibility for their own household duties, especially when it comes to raising children. Parenting, for example, is not merely about ensuring a child is supervised but also about building emotional bonds and imparting values, which are difficult to outsource. Overreliance on paid help may lead to weakened family ties or children lacking a strong parental presence. Moreover, performing daily chores can be a way of maintaining a balanced lifestyle, fostering discipline, and promoting a sense of responsibility within the household.

In my view, while delegating certain tasks is acceptable and even beneficial in some situations, people should strive to maintain involvement in essential aspects of their personal and family lives. A balanced approach is ideal: employing others for support when necessary, but not to the extent that one becomes detached from fundamental duties.

In conclusion, paying others to perform tasks one cannot or does not wish to do can indeed provide valuable employment opportunities. However, individuals should remain engaged in core responsibilities, especially those related to family and personal well-being. Striking the right balance is key to both supporting others and maintaining personal accountability.
