Governments play a crucial role in safeguarding the environment for the well-being of current and future generations, while companies are responsible for producing goods while minimizing their impact on the environment. The argument that individual efforts are inconsequential in addressing climate change warrants careful consideration. In this essay, I will present my perspective on the matter.
Primarily, governments are entrusted with the task of preserving the planet, which has been the sole habitat for humanity for millennia. This can be achieved by enacting and enforcing laws, regulations, and standards governing human activities within their jurisdictions. Developed nations typically have stringent environmental regulations, whereas developing countries struggle to keep pace due to their focus on meeting the basic needs of their citizens. For example, in Brazil, the government has been unable to prevent the burning of the Amazon rainforest by farmers, as the local population opposes government intervention in this matter.
Moreover, multinational corporations have increasingly emphasized their efforts to minimize their environmental footprint by investing substantial resources in environmental conservation. Despite their significant contributions to environmental degradation, these companies have a responsibility to protect the natural resources they utilize for profit. For instance, the renowned mining conglomerate Rio Tinto has engaged in reforestation efforts in the areas where it operates, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship.
In my view, the collective duty to preserve the Earth falls upon the eight billion inhabitants, particularly the corporate entities that often prioritize profit over environmental sustainability. Consequently, governments must establish stringent regulations and ensure compliance with environmental standards in their territories. Civil society organizations and environmental activists also play a vital role in monitoring and holding governments and corporations accountable for their environmental impact. Through collective efforts, individuals, companies, and governments can work together to create a sustainable and environmentally conscious society.
