Band 9: It was predicted that, with the development of technology, people in the 21st century would have much more free time in the past. To what extent has this prediction come true?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is projected that, due to advancements in technology, individuals in the 21st century will enjoy considerably increased leisure time. Nevertheless, I contend that this prediction has only been partially realized, as many individuals today find themselves engulfed in unprecedented levels of work obligations and societal expectations.

On one hand, it is undeniable that technology has effectively supplanted various human efforts, particularly in the realm of domestic responsibilities, thereby allowing individuals to reclaim personal time. Innovations in smart home technology, such as automated washing machines, dishwashers, robotic vacuums, and smart assistants, have become invaluable in managing household tasks. For instance, these devices liberate owners from the drudgery of routine chores after a demanding workday, allowing them to devote their evenings to relaxation and rejuvenation. Furthermore, the evolution of technology has facilitated the rise of telecommuting. Enhanced communication tools have made remote work increasingly feasible, providing individuals with more flexible schedules and a greater opportunity to enjoy their free time. An illustrative example of this is seen in organizations that prioritize remote working, where employees often save significant commuting time, enabling them to engage in healthier activities such as enjoying a balanced breakfast or exercising.

On the other hand, technological advancements have also obscured the boundary between professional and personal life, resulting in extended working hours for many employees. The omnipresence of laptops and smartphones ensures continuous connectivity to work tasks, even beyond traditional office hours. This phenomenon compels individuals to be perpetually available, further diminishing their actual leisure time. For example, it is common for professionals to receive work-related emails or messages during their days off, which significantly erodes their time for relaxation. Additionally, as technology progresses, the expectations placed upon workers constantly heighten. With the capability to automate numerous tasks, there is an increasing demand for higher productivity and longer working hours, which severely undermines the potential advantages technology could offer in generating increased leisure time.

In summary, although one must acknowledge the conveniences afforded by advanced technology, I firmly assert that the initial prediction regarding increased free time has only been partially actualized. The accompanying challenges associated with maintaining a healthy work-life balance and the rising expectations for efficiency serve to complicate this scenario.
