Nowadays, in many cities large shopping malls are becoming more popular and replacing traditional small shops. While this development has some great benefits for customers it also brings several serious disadvantages for local communities.
The main benefit of large shopping malls is convenience for customers. Malls gather many different types of stores supermarkets restaurants and cinemas under one roof. This means people do not need to travel to different places to buy food clothes or get entertainment. They can do everything in one building which saves a lot of time. For example families often go to big malls on weekends because they can buy groceries for the week shop for shoes and let their children play in the entertainment zone at the same time. Therefore shopping malls make modern life much easier and more comfortable for busy citizens.
On the other hand the growth of shopping malls destroys small local businesses. Small shops cannot compete with big malls because malls can buy products in large volumes and sell them at lower prices. As a result many family-owned shops lose their customers and close down which leads to unemployment for local shopkeepers. For instance in many small neighborhoods traditional bakeries or grocery stores are closing because a giant shopping center opened nearby. Consequently this trend harms the local economy and reduces the unique character of small streets.
In conclusion while large shopping malls offer great convenience and a lot of choices for shoppers in their daily life they also bring serious problems for small business owners and local communities. In my opinion people should balance their shopping habits to support both options.
