Band 6+: Maintaining public libraries is a waste of money since computer technology is now replacing their functions. To what extend do you agree or disagree? Write at least 250 words

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the advent of technology came e-libraries, where books and articles can be uploaded and read online. As a result of this, some individuals consider maintenance of physical libraries a wastage of resources. I completely disagree with this idea and this essay will explain why.

To begin with, many people who enjoy reading cultivated the habit using hardcopies. Due to this, it will be difficult for them to adapt as they are not used to softcopies. For examples, I prefer to read physical novels because when I developed the hobby, I had little access to digital devices. Furthermore, printed books are easier to use as they only require flipping through pages and, this is is not so for e-books. User interface for the websites may not be easy to navigate. Also, they usually require the use of internet, which sometimes may be unavailable.

Another reason why it is important to have access to printed materials is that, they enhance concentration. Digital devices have so many other functions that may distort focus when reading a book. For instance, I can not study using my phone because it keeps buzzing from so many notifications and, this distracts me. Additionally, reading on the internet is not very healthy, as light rays from digital devices can damage the eyes. For example, my best friend suffered defects to her both eyes due to constant studying using her computer.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that public libraries, where everyone can get printed materials is not a waste of funds as reading on phones or tablets can damage the eyes. Also, hardcopy novels are easier to use and they help maintain focus when reading.
